A saddle-stitched booklet is built from folded sheets nested inside one another, and each folded sheet carries exactly four pages: two on each side. That is why the page count must be a multiple of four; a 22-page document becomes a 24-page booklet with blank pages. Sheets per booklet equals the page count divided by four, and the press sheet count is that figure times the number of booklets, before spoilage. Thicker booklets also need creep compensation, because inner sheets push outward at the fold.

Four pages per folded sheet

Fold one sheet in half and you hold four booklet pages: front and back of each half. Print it on both sides and all four carry content. Nest several folded sheets and stitch through the spine and you have a saddle-stitched booklet. Every sheet added adds exactly four pages, so 8, 12, 16, 20 page counts work and 10 or 14 do not.

When a supplied document is not a multiple of four, the bindery rounds up and the extra pages ship blank, usually at the back. Estimators should surface that rounding to the customer before it becomes a surprise.

Reader spreads vs printer spreads

Pages are imposed in printer spreads, not reading order. The outermost sheet of a 16-page booklet carries pages 16 and 1 on one side and 2 and 15 on the other; each sheet's page numbers pair so that every pair on a side sums to one more than the page count. Imposition software handles the pairing, but the pattern explains why a page count change reflows every sheet.

Creep

Nested sheets wrap around one another at the spine, so the innermost pages sit slightly farther from the fold and get trimmed slightly narrower. The shift, called creep or shingling, equals roughly the paper caliper accumulating per nested sheet. On a few sheets of text stock it is invisible; on thick booklets or heavy stock, page content near the face trim visibly walks. Compensation shifts inner-page content toward the spine, and any booklet beyond a handful of nested sheets deserves the check.

From booklets to press sheets

Sheets per booklet = pages / 4. Net press sheets = sheets per booklet x booklet quantity, when the flat sheet runs one booklet spread per sheet. Spoilage and makeready then apply per pass exactly as on flat work, and stitching itself destroys some copies, which belongs in the finishing spoilage.
