How print imposition works
Imposition is the step where finished pieces are arranged on a larger press sheet before printing. The number of pieces that fit on one sheet is the n-up count, and it is found by dividing the usable sheet area into a grid of trim-size pieces, trying both orientations, and keeping the arrangement that yields the most pieces. Every extra piece per sheet cuts the sheet count for the whole run, which is usually the largest single saving available on a job.
From finished size to trim size
The piece you quote is the finished size, but the piece you place on the sheet is the trim size: the finished size plus bleed on every edge. A 3.5 x 2 inch business card with a standard 0.125 inch bleed occupies 3.75 x 2.25 inches of sheet. Skipping this step overstates the yield and understates the paper.
Between pieces you also need room for the cut. When pieces share a common trim line, bleed-to-bleed, the bleed itself provides that room. Jobs with borders or critical alignment sometimes add a separate gutter on top.
The usable area is smaller than the sheet
A press cannot print to the very edge of the sheet it is gripping. The gripper bar holds one long edge of the sheet as it travels through the press, and that strip, commonly around 0.375 to 0.5 inches on small offset presses, cannot carry an image. A smaller side-guide margin is often kept clear on one short edge for the registration guide.
Both margins come off the sheet once, on one edge each. Subtracting the gripper from both long edges, or from all four edges, is a common spreadsheet mistake that silently costs pieces on every sheet.
Rotation and mixed orientation
A grid of upright pieces is only one candidate. Rotating every piece 90 degrees often fits more, and the best layouts on many size combinations are mixed: a block of upright pieces plus a strip of rotated pieces in the space a pure grid would waste. Estimating software should try all three and keep the winner.
One caution: rotation changes the grain direction of the piece relative to the sheet. For folded work, grain should normally run parallel to the fold, so a rotated or mixed layout that wins on count can still lose on quality. The yield calculation tells you what fits; the job decides what is acceptable.
From n-up to sheets
Once the n-up count is known, the net sheet count is the order quantity divided by the n-up, rounded up. On top of that comes spoilage, the sheets expected to be wasted in setup and running, and makeready waste for each press pass. Those allowances are covered in the spoilage planning guide.

What does n-up mean in printing?
